Girl Scouts helping with River Restoration
Girl Scouts at the Kickoff

SGMIA has a number of projects; many involving community groups.  Ongoing is the Hansen Greenhouse and Nursery Native Plant Project.  The goal of this project is:

  • California Native Plants for sale for small and large landscaping projects;
  • Landscape recommendations for native plants and water conservation;
  • Native plant landscaping information, tips and techniques available from greenhouse & nursery staff;
  • Educational information for all ages, including native plant programs for groups, large and small;
  • Forest replanting projects; and
  • Seed collecting projects.

You and your group are welcome to spend the day at the Hansen Greenhouse and Nursery located in the Angeles National Forest at the Mt. Baldy Visitor’s Center to learn about native plants and conservation principles.  If you sign up to participate, you will able to do the following:

  • Learn about native plants and how they conserve water.
  • Plant some natives from seed to take home and watch them grow.
  • Experience and name native plants on a hike in the Angeles National Forest.

Your group can also bring a snack or lunch and enjoy it at the picnic tables nearby.  Restrooms also available at the visitor center.

Available in three-hour time slots:  9 AM to noon & 1 PM to 4 PM (April-October)
Cost is $5.00 per person.  Groups of 8-12 children or larger and their leaders can be accomodated.

Contact information for this project is:  Annie Marquis, quispup@verizon.net.

Past Events

On October 28, 2006, Girl Scouts from Spanish Trails Council help on Make a Difference Day.  Many of these girls will remember how they have helped the environment for years to come.  That is why it is so important to involve our youth.

On September 30, 2006, Hansen Greenhouse and Nursery Native Plant Project in conjunction with National Public Lands Day had its kickoff.  The event took place in Mt. Baldy Village, CA on National Public Lands Day.

Girl Scouts from Spanish Trails Council came for the day to learn about our native plants, to identify and plant many varieties of our California natives.  The girls also got to clean debris from around the Visitor Center to help meet fire codes.  They also learned from forest rangers about the history of the forest service, fire safety and the jobs they do everyday to take care of our land.
